What sets Crash apart from other movies dealing with sex is that it manages to be disengaged, earnest, and complicated. It opens in a airplane hanger where we first meet Catherine. The sexual tension and situations escalate the further Ballard goes down the path of the pyschosexual crash. At one point, after viewing a car crash and its victims, Ballard, Catherine, and a member of a car crash cult take a car to be washed. While in the car wash, Catherine has sex with another man in the back seat while Ballard drives on. It’s dirty, nasty, and rough sex. It’s a little uncomfortable to watch in it’s subdued violence, but it is undeniably sexy. After the two come, Catherine puts her vaginally moistend fingers on the headrest next to her husbands head, and it’s known that the she has come like geyser.
Sex: we love it, but it’s kind of boring to watch. In film it tends to be a dissapointing dead end. There is only so much you can do with something as simple as Peg A fitting into Slot B. In Videodrome, the main character becomes the victim of a video signal in a videotape that alters his mind/body so that he morphs in the embodiment of “the new flesh” (which is a little hard to describe succintly so I will leave it at that).
Even in The Fly and The Dead Zone which are not wholey Cronenberg films we find similar themes. In The Fly, a remake of the 1958 original, we revisit technology and how it alters the body and mind of a scientist in a teleportation experiment gone really wrong—twice. The Dead Zone, made from the Stephen King novel, is a little more subtle in its themes. Johnny, played by Christopher Walken, is a school teacher who, after a car accident, finds that he has the power to read peoples’ pasts and futures when he makes physical contact with them. The focus of the film is on the powers he gains and the situations this leads him into. It’s not as overt as the rest of his ouvre, but even when working with others’ source material like The Dead Zone Cronenberg there is the persistent theme of technology, mind, and body in the initial car crash that gives Johnny his special abilities.
Crash, like The Fly and The Dead Zone, is not Cronenberg’s own material. Based on J.G Ballard’s novel of the same title, it does incorporate many of the same themes that Cronenberg uses in his projects. The story follows Jame Ballard (James Spader), a film director who is in a disengaged with relationship with his wife Catherine (Deborah Unger). He is involved in a head-on car collision where the passenger in the car he hits dies as he passes through Ballard’s windshield. Immediately after the collision, while Ballard is still stunned, the driver of the other car, Dr. Remington (Holly Hunter) exposes to Ballard her breasts. It’s not made clear whether or not she intentionally exposes herself to him, but from this point forward Ballard, Dr. Remington, cars, phyical injury, death and sex are all intertwined.

Though just a handjob, it seems that the Ballard’s accident has triggered a rekindling of the nastiness, danger, and vulgarity that usually accompanies sex.
